Start the Day Right
Fibre plays a vital role in our health, but many of us aren’t getting enough — only about 4% of UK adults meet the recommended 30g daily. Granola (麦片) can be a great way to start your morning with a fibre-rich boost, but shop-bought versions are often pricey and packed with sugar. This homemade granola, however, is not only full of fibre, but also rich in nutrients, plant points, healthy fats, and protein.

The healthy bit
Fibre deserves far more attention. It’s essential for a happy gut, steady energy, and balanced hormones. This recipe provides a variety of fibres to keep you fuller for longer, slow the release of sugar into your bloodstream, and support healthy digestion. This granola is also a fantastic source of soluble (水溶性的) fibre; this attracts water to form a gel-like substance in the digestive tract, binding to fatty acids and supporting healthy metabolism (新陈代谢).
For other easy ways to increase your fibre intake, try filling half your plate with two or three different vegetables (and some fruit) at each meal. Adding nuts, beans, or lentils to dishes, and keeping a jar of mixed seeds on the table to sprinkle over meals, can also make a big difference.
21. What is a downside of shop-bought granola?
A. It has few nutrients.B. It is difficult to store for long.
C. It lacks fibre and protein.D. It is high in sugar and expensive.
22. How long does the homemade granola need to be baked in total?
A. 5 minutes.B. 25 minutes.C. 35 minutes.D. 40 minutes.
23. What benefit does soluble fibre in the granola bring?
A. It boosts your appetite.B. It promotes healthy metabolism.
C. It aids sugar absorption.D. It transforms gel-like substances.
B
About a year ago, my mother turned on the dishwasher and went to the airport to drop off my father who was headed overseas on a work trip. By the time she got back, there was water all over the kitchen floor. We called a repairman, only to be told the dishwasher would have to be replaced. A new one was ordered but it would not arrive for more than a month. As my mother had a tight schedule, I had no choice but to take on the task of washing dishes by hand after dinner.
I soon found myself faced with a pile of thankless dishes in the sink, urging me to get on with it and deliver on my duty. At the beginning, I was annoyed when doing the dishes. I was in a rush to be done with them since I had an endless list of things to finish as a high school student taking a tough course load. Gradually, I realized that, for about 15 minutes every day, I could slow down time and forget everything in the world as my mind, eyes and hands focused on a simple task that would always result in success.
We did finally get the new dishwasher placed. However, I continued to wash dishes by hand after dinner, perplexing my mother immensely.
Washing dishes by hand has been more educational than I could have ever imagined. I’m running around stressed most of the day. There are homework assignments, projects, quizzes and tests competing for my attention and time. I’ve caged myself in a prison of my ambitions and expectations, cut off from many aspects of the world.
However, standing at the same spot every day in front of the kitchen window washing dishes has allowed me to recover some of it. My mind has taken snap-shots of the changing view over the yard outside the kitchen window and meditated on the passage of time in this sliver of the universe in front of me.
24. Why did the author start washing dishes by hand?
A. The old dishwasher broke down.B. His mother requested him to do so.
C. He attempted to please his father.D. The new dishwasher was over budget.
25. What did the author think of dish-washing initially?
A. It was a stress-reliever.B. It was complicated.
C. It was a money-saver.D. It was burdensome.
26. What does the underlined word “perplexing” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Offending.B. Puzzling.C. Discouraging.D. Inspiring.
27. What can we learn about the author from the last two paragraphs?
A. He grew more sensitive to the beauty of nature.
B. He regretted devoting too much time to study.
C. He decided to abandon some of his ambitions.
D. He desired to move to a house with a larger yard.
C
Arabidopsis thaliana (拟南芥), a small thin weed of the mustard family, never seemed likely to gain scientific fame. Yet this common plant has greatly changed from an ignored weed to a biological superstar due to scientists’ foresight, continuous exploration and joint efforts.
Arabidopsis’ journey began with young geneticist George Rédei. At first, Rédei’s research on this weed was widely doubted because many thought only valuable crops or decorative plants were worth studying. But he carried its seeds all the time and later continued research in the US. Inspired by German botanist Friedrich Laibach, he saw its value as a model organism, similar to fruit flies in genetics. Compared with corn and wheat, Arabidopsis has clear advantages: small size, short growth cycle, many seeds, but what sets it apart from other experimental plants is its only five pairs of chromosomes (染色体), making gene location much easier.
In the 1980s, young scientists like Chris Somerville and Elliot Meyerowitz also noticed its potential. They proved its value through experiments, finding its small genome with little repeated DNA made gene discovery easier. In 2000, a global team finished its research and published the result in Nature, which provided a solid base for future studies.
Today, researches on Arabidopsis have provided important support for crop output expansion, ecological system management and climate change reduction. For instance, the genes identified in Arabidopsis have helped scientists understand the fruit development mechanism of tomatoes and improve the stress resistance of rice.
Beyond plant science, Arabidopsis has also brought new insights to human health research. Notably, about 70% of human cancer-related genes and genes related to neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s all exist in this plant.
Arabidopsis is not without limitations. Its simple structure, while useful for genetic research, cannot fully represent the complexity of crops like wheat or corn. However, even with these concerns, this once-ignored weed has already proved that great scientific value can lie in the most unexpected places, and it continues to inspire researchers to explore the mysteries of life.
28. What is special about Arabidopsis as a model organism?
A. Its abundant seeds.B. Its brief life period.
C. Its few chromosomes.D. Its unique outer shape.
29. What can be inferred about the Arabidopsis research?
A. It cast new light on medical studies.B. It prioritized traditional model organisms.
C. It gained support from most geneticists.D. It targeted major management problems.
30. What is the function of the last paragraph?
A. To prove the complexity of Arabidopsis.B. To stress the limitations of Arabidopsis.
C. To restate the importance of Arabidopsis.D. To underline the structure of Arabidopsis.
31. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Applications of Arabidopsis Studies
B. The Link between Arabidopsis and Humans

In the blink of an eye, artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly entered every walk of life, from self-driving taxis to software that reads X-rays, to virtual assistants that can schedule meetings and draft e-mails. However, will AI displace entire industries as mechanized factories did before?
Like past world-changing tools such as mechanical cloth-making machines, AI is set to reshape the workplace greatly. But techno-pessimists argue AI’s impact has never been seen before. Economists estimate AI could rob 40% of jobs, with machines replacing much skilled human work and note that even remaining jobs may see declining wages due to reduced labor value. Amid these worries, 2024 Nobel Prize-winning economists Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson advise learning from David Ricardo’s flexible thinking about the early Industrial Revolution.
In his work Principles of Political Economy and Taxation, economist Ricardo initially supported new spinning machines (纺纱机), believing they would promote productivity for all. Though home spinners were displaced, many shifted to weaving (织布). However, technology changed everything: one machine outperformed 10-20 handweavers, ending cottage industry. Displaced weavers had no choices as factories created few new jobs, leading to falling wages and social unrest. Witnessing these consequences, Ricardo transformed his view. His 1821 revised work acknowledged that factors boosting national income might also make population extra resources and worsen laborers’ conditions.
England eventually learned from the struggles of handweavers and the working class. The government expanded political representation for industrial cities, passed the 1833 Factory Act to manage child labor, and ended the protectionist Corn Laws in the 1840s to lower food costs.
The history repeats today. As the AI era approaches, Johnson notes that AI has attracted enormous talents, similar to the late-1990s Internet boom, but history — especially the Industrial Revolution — shows that “new miracle machines do not guarantee benefits for most people.” With thoughtful policies, AI can avoid repeating past mistakes and build an inclusive future. When technology is guided by wisdom and responsibility, it can become a powerful tool that lifts people up, reduces inequality, and brings greater opportunities to all.
32. Which question can paragraph 2 answer?
A. How is AI to affect the work settings?
B. Why has technology replaced human work?
C. Who suffered most from the Industrial Revolution?
D. What did cloth-making machines bring to workers?
33. Why did David Ricardo change his attitude?
A. The closure of cottage industry.B. The appearance of spinning and weaving.
C. The indifference of the government.D. The suffering of workers and the society.
34. What lesson can be learned from the text?
A. Every step forward is progress.B. Technology makes the complex simple.
C. History is where you find the future.D. With great power comes great responsibility.
35. What might be talked about following the last paragraph?
A. Details of David Ricardo’s theories.B. Policy examples for guiding AI.
C. The introduction of the Internet boom.D. The development of AI technology.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We’ve all had those moments when life applies the brakes — maybe a failed exam, a broken relationship, or a missed opportunity. In such moments, the bravest choice isn’t waiting passively for the light to turn green, but gathering the courage to restart. 36
The first key step to restart is dropping the “guilt backpack” filled with “should haves”. Maybe you messed up a presentation or let someone down, but you did your best with the knowledge and emotional strength you had then. Forgive that imperfect version of yourself. Don’t waste energy bothering over those who may have hurt you — their thoughtlessness shows their own troubles, not your worth. 37 You deserve to reclaim that energy.
Next, reach out. Staying alone feels safe when you’re hurting, but healing needs connection. Find a trusted companion who will listen without judgement. Their listening ears can turn your confusion into clarity. However, healing isn’t just about receiving support; giving it can be equally powerful. 38 Giving time to others, like helping a neighbor carry groceries or tutoring a classmate, pulls you out of self-pity. You’ll rediscover your value as a helper, not just someone stuck in hardship.
39For instance, replace self-criticism with the gentle phrase: “I’m doing my best right now.” Movement is another mood booster. Exercise — even a 15-minute hike, a quick bike ride, or a few yoga stretches — unlocks mood-lifting chemicals. 40 Even 10 minutes of petting a neighbor’s dog or playing with a shelter puppy boosts “feel-good” hormones. The warmth of a dog’s fur and its excited tail wags are simple, powerful reminders of joy. Small steps, taken consistently, lead to big comebacks.
A. Make peace with yourself, and let the injury go.
B. Your bounce-back power just needs a little push.
C. Helping others also eases your own emotional pain.
D. That backpack gets heavier with every passing year.
E. Performing small favors for family also boosts positive feelings.
F. When restarting still feels stressful, focus on tiny and manageable acts.
G. Besides physical activities, there are other easy ways to lift your mood quickly.

Two days before her school’s Christmas program, my nine-year-old daughter Charlotte proudly announced, “I’m singing solo (独唱) ‘Silent Night’ “. That puzzled me. Charlotte loved to sing. She sang in the shower and the car and just about everywhere else, despite her struggles with high pitch (高音). Now she could carry a tune a bit better than last year, but I didn’t think she’d improved enough yet to sing a solo. Reminding myself that all things are indeed possible in grade school, I chose not to question her confidence.
I soon learned that my two other daughters in 11th grade, Monica and Corina, were also to perform in a different Christmas program on the same night. They were skilled singers and piano players. This time, they were giving a piano performance that night, an hour later than their younger sister. The three girls practiced everyday at home, filling our room with singing, piano music and laughter. Sometimes the two teenagers would give Charlotte some tips on improving her pitch, and could even accompany her singing “Silent Night” on the piano in a very short time. Knowing them well-prepared, I looked forward to the Christmas programs this year.
The big day finally came, and I came to school to watch Charlotte’s performance with delight. However, things went wrong. Shortly after dropping her backstage, she found me in the hall, eyes filled with tears. Her teacher explained there had been a misunderstanding — Charlotte was not picked to sing a solo. Heartbroken, she asked to leave. Though upset, I focused on comforting her.
Teenagers notice everything. When we arrived at their auditorium earlier than scheduled, Monica and Corina quickly realized something was wrong. When I explained the situation, they showed sincere sympathy. “Come with us, Charlotte. You can see backstage and meet our friends.” The invitation beat any flavor of ice-cream, and Charlotte gladly accepted and went with them. I sat with the audience and waited, until the host announced my girls’ names.
